Petroglyphs in Sinaloa

Yesterday we had a treat thanks to our friends Bev and Karle Dressen. They drove us North of Mazatlan along the coast about 50 km where we turned off the main road and wound down toward the ocean about 4 km. We came to a beach called Playa Las Labradas.

We started some serious searching of the boulders on the beach. It didn't take long. Simple designs were etched or carved into the rock faces. Very random. We would see one boulder with the petroglyphs and

then a large patch of the dark colored rocks worn smooth by the wind and tides. But before we left for a long walk along a beautiful deserted beach, we had seen 50 or 60 specimens.  A small museo at the head of the path leading to the beach and rocks suggested that these rock carvings dated back to 1500 BC. I'm a little skeptical in that it would seem over 3500 years that the carvings would be worn off the rocks by the wave action. But quien sabe?

Here are a few pictures of what we saw:

  1. We will have to add this to our list of things to do when we return to Mazatlan.
